Candidates

Nine (9) candidates stood for election to the Senate. These were the following:

Candidate nationTime in Union (acc. to NationStates) on 2021-06-03
British Isles and Commonwealth Realms405 days
Druing504 days
Glaciosia23 days
Josephto111 days
Kingdom of Sacento398 days

Supersaurus68 days
Xandorian Plexora9 days
We The People Gouvernor90 days

We note the residency of these nations in an attempt to illustrate their “newcomer” vs “oldtimer” status in an objective way; however it should be noted that many of these nations may move in and out of the region for various reasons, such as UDSAF duties, and thus a low residency period is not in and of itself a marker of a newcomer.

It is notable that several candidates have been in the Union for less than three months. Three candidates had never stood for election under their names in the UDS before: Mr Casually Cruel, Supersaurus, and Xandorian Plexora.

Calculation of the Next Senate’s Seats

This Senate election had 28 valid votes.
The March Senate election had 16 valid votes.
The January Senate election had 20 valid votes.

Using the formula provided in Article 2, clause 3.a of the Constitution, by which there shall be one seat for every four voters:

28+16+20 = 64
64/12 = 5.333

Rounding up, this formula gives 6 seats for the next Senate election.

General Remarks

Chief Electoral Commissioner, Asdersland

For an election that was basically held on a week’s notice, it is my personal belief that it went astoundingly well with the help of Chief Justice Kronprinzessin and Deputy Commissioner Kade. The new Electoral Commission’s role is to not only count ballots but also to preserve, protect, and promote the democratic process which forms the core of the region. Through a concerted effort to ensure citizens could sign up to be candidates and vote easily, as well as know about this opportunity, turnout has nearly doubled. The election was highly competitive and yet extremely cordial, while producing clear winners, which shows the benefits of the Average Placement system.

While not everything went smoothly--particularly with regards to the release of this official report and privacy concerns--these were raised as legitimate questions and as necessary inquiries into methods of improvement of the democratic system. In the future the Electoral Commission will work to maintain or improve turnout even further and keep the democratic process in good working order.

In general, I am extremely glad that I had good working partners and that our calm debates on the issues affecting the election resulted in reasoned and fruitful conclusions. This is honestly some of the most enjoyable work I have done in the Union.

I hope to see all the Union’s citizens participating in next month’s presidential election.
note: thank you to Kron for fixing the formatting in this report. Copy/paste obliterated a lot of it (oops)
