The Republica Accords: A Simple Treaty, Complex Circumstances
By: Zukchiva Yura, Editor-in-Chief

The Union of Democratic States has seen a recent foreign-affairs boom under President Phoenix. With his hard work along with that of Foreign Affairs Minister Druing, it is no accident that the Union is becoming a relevant region in the interregional sphere.

One sign of the Executive’s tenacity in this regard is the ratification of the Republica Accords. Passed by both the Senate and General Assembly with extremely high majorities in favor of ratification, the treaty was signed into law by President Phoenix on July 21st, 2020. Given the strong relations the Union holds with Europeia, the ratification of these Accords proves as a logical step for the two regions’ ever-growing relationships.

However, what should’ve been a simple matter was met with controversy near the end of ratification. On July 19th, 2020, Citizen Kuriko stated within the Union Discord, in a slightly angry tone, how they hadn’t heard about the Accords until they were already being voted on in the Assembly.

Following discussions revealed that the reason Kuriko held such disdain for the Accords, and Europiea in general, was because of an incident that occurred to a region Kuriko had founded called A Hole to Hide In. According to Kuriko, A Hole to Hide In was an active roleplay region whose region was used, without Kuriko’s permission, for military operations by Europiea’s navy.

This prompted some debate and discussion on the subject, with one Senator wishing that they had come across this information while the Accords were still at vote in the Senate.

So what exactly is this incident, and why does it matter in regards to the Accords?

THE STORY OF A HOLE TO HIDE IN

On February 9th, 2017, Kuriko founded the region known as “A Hole to Hide In”. As A Hole to Hide In developed in the following months, it began to take shape as a stable roleplaying region, with a distinct vow of neutrality concerning the everlasting Raiding/Defending conflict in NationStates.

Sometime after its founding, A Hole to Hide In joined the back-then well-known Defender alliance known as FORGE. While Kuriko has stated that the region primarily joined FORGE due to its cultural aspects, A Hole to Hide In would soon identify itself as ‘Defender’, despite not participating actively in Defender military operations.

Around June 2017, the Europiean Republican Navy began utilizing A Hole To Hide In as a jump point, due to the region’s late update time. In other words, the Navy began to store and mobilize a large number of puppets through the region for various military operations.

Due to Europiea’s participation in raiding, as well as the disruption the mass movement of puppets caused to A Hole to Hide In’s community, Kuriko asked Europiean leadership to cease military operations within the roleplaying region. While the exact wording is unknown, the Europiean response is believed to have been somewhere along the lines of “Your region is worthless, we can do whatever we want, and you cannot do anything to stop us.” Military operations continued after this discussion.

Continued Navy operations eventually forced Kuriko to password A Hole to Hide In, and by October 2017, Kuriko had moved the entire community into a new successor region Kuriko had founded, named ‘The Hole To Hide In”.

The incident left a scar on the regional community of The Hole to Hide In, with many community members from A Hole to Hide In deciding not to move to the new region. As a result of the attacks, The Hole To Hide In, while eventually rejoining FORGE, forever maintained its original standard of neutrality.

WHY IT MATTERS

The reason this incident matters and should have been relevant to treaty negotiations is that The Hole to Hide In has maintained embassies with the Union for around two years. Its predecessor region, A Hole to Hide In, also had relations with the Union. This means that information on this incident should have been made publicly known to the Senate and Assembly during discussions on the new treaty, as it strongly pertained to the Union’s current relations.

Since the Republica Accords have already been ratified, the very least the Union should do is seek, as a matter of respect for the community of the Hole to Hide In, an apology from the government of Europiea for the actions of its Navy.

While the entire situation is far from ideal, it is the hope of Everyday News that The Hole to Hide In will someday receive compensation in the form of an apology, or at least acknowledgment, for what its community was forced to endure.
