Executive of The Union of Democratic States
By Druing

The Executive branch of the Union of Democratic States’ Government serves as both the Union’s face and backbone. Led by a President and Vice President elected by the citizens of the region, it is the job of the Executive to oversee, manage and grow the region.

To accomplish this, a President nominates Ministers who, after being scrutinised by the Senate, operate on their delegated authority, to run five Ministries, each with their own area of focus (although they sometimes overlap, in which case Ministries will co-operate) - Foreign Affairs, Census, Culture, Defence and Justice. The President, their Vice President , as well as these five Ministers form the Cabinet. They are the region’s ruling body and the people who will determine the direction that the region takes, for the following four to eight months.

“Speak softly and carry a big stick; You will go far.” — Theodore Roosevelt

Every road in the Union, whether from outside or within, leads to the Executive in one way or another; A Resident cannot become a Citizen without first applying for citizenship and being granted the same by the Ministry of the Census. Similarly, incoming diplomats require visas, which are handled by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. A bill, whether it may be a new regional law or an amendment to the Constitution, may be processed in the Senate and General Assembly, but does not become law until the moment the President signs it.

While the President is the Commander-in-Chief of the UDSAF, the Ministry of Defence is the body which handles its day-to-day operations. The Ministry of the Census, in addition to processing citizenship and managing the roster of approved citizens, also aims to try and grow the region by reaching out to and potentially recruiting interested nations. Similarly, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, alongside visa processing and managing the Union’s ambassadorial network, seeks to expand the region’s international influence by approaching regions to either offer opening diplomatic relations or improve on existing ones, typically via the negotiation of a treaty. The Ministry of Culture’s duty is to organise regular festivities to offer fun activity to anyone interested, while the Ministry of Justice prosecutes criminals and advises the President on legal matters.

While being part of the higher levels of the Executive imposes circumstantial restrictions on participation in other areas of the Union (for example, since they are both elected public offices, the President and the Vice President can’t also be a Senator and vice versa, although a Minister can), the core principle of the Executive is that anyone can participate - the only barrier to running for, being appointed to or applying to a position, is holding Citizenship in the Union. It’s comparable to a fountain of sorts, trickling down the regional power from the top; from the President, to the Ministers, to their deputies and to their Ministerial Assistants. As with every part of the Union, participation is crucial to the Executive’s continued operation.
