Legislature of the Union of Democratic States
By Isles

“The greatest single virtue of a strong legislature is not what it can do, but what it can prevent.” — J William Fulbright

When you see the word ‘legislature’, what comes to mind? For most of you it’s either the US Capital or the UK Houses of Parliament, with their sprawling halls and debating chambers, embedded both in leather and history. UDS Legislature is an organic, living parliament, and the Senate and the General Assembly are its brain and body respectively. I am Isles, Senator of the UDS. And I will tell you the story of the heart of the Union, it’s Legislature.

Like any self-respecting region, UDS is a democracy, where the power is vested in the people. UDS enshrines the motto, something that has been the central tenet of democracy, written by Alcium to Charlemagne in 798, “Vox populi, vox Dei'', voice of the people is the voice of God. To enable vox populi be vox Dei, the Union’s constitution established the Senate and the General Assembly as the horses of the cart which is the Union, and pull it forward. Five senators in the upper chamber and the citizens in the lower chamber together decide the fate of the Union.

In the recent past, the legislature has enacted laws creating ministries, establishing a criminal code, a judicial system, regional archives, a citizenship law, and much more. These are the many successful acts of the legislature. They shape the Union and its citizens and govern them justly and in accordance with the law. But the job of the legislature is not just to act, but to stop a wrong law from coming into force. There have been times when a bill introduced before a house is not sound in law, or in common sense. It is in these times that the legislature has, in its wisdom, rejected them.

The Union is served well by its legislature, and its members are the backbone. Continued participation of the citizens has been the key. In the coming times their contribution will be evermore necessary.
