2020 - New Constitution New Year

2020 has been a very different year than what we expected. It has been a prolonged vacation for most of us. But 2020 has been very productive as well for UDS. Let me tell you about that.
The Union of Democratic States adopted a new constitution in March of 2020. It changed the system of governance from a parliamentary to presidential democratic republic. The new constitution a bicameral legislature with the Senate, with selected members, as the upper house and the General Assembly, comprising of all the citizens, as the lower house.
For the first two months of 2020, the erstwhile office of Prime Minister was occupied by The Noble Thatcherites. He was replaced by North Plegia as acting President, for two days. The first UDS Presidential Elections were held in March, and Phoenix Coalition was elected the first President on the Union of Democratic States. He would go on to serve for two terms of four months each, first with Asdersland as his VP and then Dome as his VP. He was replaced by Druing as president, who will serve until February 2021, with Glaciosia as their VP.
2020 was also significant due to an event now termed as ‘Drewpocalypse’. All of you know what it is. This rush saw the Union reaching more than 800 member nations. Also significant was the transition of World Assembly Delegation from Asdersland to Dome Artan. Asdersland had served as WAD for over a year. Dome Artan brought about an award for the most endorsing nations called 'Endobacon Awards’ and were awarded every month.
The Drewpocalypse rush, however, was not permanent. The sudden inflation of our numbers was not sustained for long. The number of nations fell from 838 to 315 nations. Those who stayed have become invaluable members of the Union. Dome was personally responsible for the recruitment of many, and this ranks among his many contributions to the UDS. So, his loss was a great shock to all of us who worked with him. He CTEd in late October, and created a vacuum that has been difficult to fill yet.
But every adversity comes with opportunities. This time was a shining example that the Union faces its problems with courage, bravery and dignity, for that is what the rest of NationStates has always admired us for. The World Assembly Delegate Transition from Dome to Asdersland was the crowning glory of the the Union. All citizens came together, UDSAF returned from foreign deployment, and together we put Asders as WAD of the region.
UDSAF also participated in many liberations across the months. UDSAF and it’s allies fought its toughest enmities so far, South Pacific, Middle Earth and Smol Fur Empire. Many citizens also joined the armed forces this year.
As 2020 comes to an end, UDS and its branches of government, its armed forces, and its citizens have grown through its experiences. The new constitution has breathed fresh air into the Union. And this year we celebrate the quinquennial ceremony of the Union. 2020 is also a significant year for another happy reason. Of the numerous nations that joined this year, many remained here, and became part of institutions that make up the Union. New faces joined the cabinet, the Senate, the General Assembly, became soldiers and ambassadors, wrote laws, and made the Union better that before.
