2019 - Rewriting the Union's History
By Comlogical

2019 started on a shaky state for the Union after the turmoil in the previous year, with inactivity and uncertainty on the horizon. After endless Constitutional Conventions took place, this year finally saw a breakthrough for one of the most hot button issues in the Union.

Asdersland was just elected as the Prime Minister on the 30th of December in the year 2018, with a roster of 210 nations in the region. The Constitutional Contest was just formed under the speakership of the Second United States Republic, commonly known as Tanisha. There was no draft for the citizenry to vote on in the first place, but after 20 days of inactivity, on February 15th, two drafts by Kronprinzessen and Duckstan emerged, offering different views on future administration, with the former [Kronprinzessen] offering the separation of the Prime Minister’s powers into two offices: the Presidency and the Prime Ministry - appointed by the lower house, while the latter [Duckstan] proposed a unicameral legislature, “nuking” all laws, with the Bill of Rights as the sole exception. Duckstan’s proposal was later selected as the inspiration for the current Constitution.

February midterm elections for the Assembly rolled by, with the citizens electing Die Kronprinzessin (3.55), Drawception (4.40), Comlogical (4.40), Australia-Hungary (4.70), Eurech (5.10), North Plegia (5.55), Newbekistan (6.35), We The People (6.40), and Sundarboom (6.60). Sundarboom once served as Zion Imperium’s running mate in the position of the Deputy Prime Minister, and then resigning after a few months, never again to make a resurgence until that time.

At this time, there were only three active parties in the Union - the Coalition for the Better Union (CBU), the Free Unionist Party (FUP), renamed from the Free Conservative Union (FCU), and the Independent Justice Party (IJP) that eventually went inactive. These parties eventually clashed against each other in the subject of revamping the Constitution, but the region’s general activity levels remained low.

The Congress, made up of the Assembly and the Senate, passed a motion in March 2019 to establish a Constitutional Convention. The purpose of the said convention was to collect and consolidate ideas from the Constitutional Contest. Not long after the passage, Asdersland was nominated as the chairman by the Council of State. Assemblyman Newbekistan, who was later banned for electoral fraud and anti-Semitism, resigned from his seat. He was then followed by the resignation of The Noble Thatcherites from his position as the Director of Foreign Affairs, with Brittalia succeeding him. Brittalia announced embassy reforms, which included embassy withdrawals, updates to the embassy policy, and initiating relations in which the Union has had no contact before.

On April 12th, 2019, the Supreme Court under the newly-appointed Chief Justice We The People, abbreviated as WTP, has published a report on North Plegia’s activity before and after his tenure as the World Assembly delegate of the Union. According to the report, North Plegia has “shown a pattern of dangerous behavior, one which has the potential of causing great harm and destabilization to the Union''. It was not the first time this has happened. He was involved with the Dele-gate Scandal of 2017, and was found guilty.

Perhaps the most unstable 2-week ever recorded in the books of Union history was the dates April 16th to 30th, where three Prime Ministers succeeded each other in the nick of time. Asdersland resigned, and released a statement that he was “incapable of running the executive”. By law, the Second United States Republic (Tanisha) succeeded him. She was the tenth Prime Minister and the first female one.

Unfortunately, her reign was short-lived, as Duckstan was elected the eleventh Prime Minister on April 30th, defeating incumbent Tanisha for the first time since Khevo in the year 2017. He ran under the campaign of regular cabinet meetings, transparency, autonomy for ministries, reforming the Ministry of Education, reviewing the Embassy Policy, and encouraging citizen activity.

This was the beginning of much more rocky obstacles that the Unionists have to face.

The Bill to Nuke All, a bill designed to repeal every Union law, with the exception of the legislative rules of procedure, was passed by the Senate in the month of June. It was authored by former Chief Justice Phoenix Coalition, and includes the Education Act of 2017, which established the Ministry of Education. The Ministry was plagued with inactivity issues, so it was seen as a favorable move by the Unionists. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Duckstan finally went through with his nominations. Wonkeyblurts was to serve as the Minister of Roleplay, Kade as the Minister of the Census, and Comlogical as the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

The administrative team has made an alarming discovery that former Assemblyman and CBU Chairman, NaeNaeinstan, operated two nations - NaeNaeinstan and Newbekistan, which violates the one-account-per-player precedent that the region follows. The question of electoral fraud was also raised, and thus Kade promptly banned NaeNaeinstan from the forums and the Discord server on May 19th, 2019.

Duckstan subsequently resigned less than midway through his elected term, and per the Premiership Succession Act of 2018, Drawception succeeded him as the Prime Minister, with some cabinet changes. Comlogical was nominated as the Deputy Prime Minister, and he resigned from his Ministry post. The Ministry of Roleplay, which hosts a separate community in its Discord server, was mostly untouched during these troubles that have struck the Union. In the month of August, Minister of Roleplay (MoRP) Wonkeyblurts announced a full reset, citing inactivity and unrealism with the current universe.

After a little over a month after Drawception took office, he resigned on July 22nd, 2019, citing personal circumstances. Comlogical then took office as the thirteenth Prime Minister, nominating North Plegia as the Deputy Prime Minister and also the Minister of Foreign Affairs, but he encountered opposition from the legislature. He was eventually approved to take the position. Prime Minister Comlogical then attempted to tackle the issues that gripped the Union - namely inactivity and recruitment issues. He issued an executive order creating the Homeland Affairs Committee, and issued another one to amend the previous executive order, to clarify the members of the said committee. It didn’t do anything aside from reactivating the API recruitment methods and the Senate reviewing more bills via the Bill Review Committee. The Union’s population struck at its record lowest - 97 nations on August 18th, 2019, and the entire region was fatigued at the state of inactivity. Something must be really done.

The Noble Thatcherites was elected as the Prime Minister, alongside North Plegia as the Deputy Prime Minister in the August 2019 Prime Minister elections, and it was considered the closest race ever for the position. Against him was the former Chief Justice Phoenix Coalition, with Brittalia as his running mate. There were 23 votes casted, in which 18 were counted as valid, tying the votes into 9-9. The vote was handed over to the Senate, which comprised 3 CBU members, 3 FCU members, and 2 independents. Senators Tanisha, Asdersland, Kronprinzessin, and Wonkeyblurts voted for Phoenix, while senators Comlogical, Drawception, Blazeville and Khevo voted in favor for Thatcher. The senatorial vote was tied 4-4 as well, and as per the constitution, Deputy Prime Minister North Plegia was to break the tie. He voted in favor of The Noble Thatcherites, making him the Prime Minister to succeed Comlogical after August 30th, 2019.

He was inaugurated on August 30th, 2019, making him the fourteenth Prime Minister and perhaps the one who kickstarted the Union population back into its shape. Right after the election, Thatcher submitted his nominations, which include North Plegia as the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Phoenix Coalition as the Minister of the Census, Second United States Republic as the Minister of Culture, and We The People as General-at-Arms. They were approved immediately by the legislature, and the Cabinet got into work immediately.

There were 100 nations when the 2019 Fall Elections were held. After one month, the growth and the efforts were finally paying off, standing at 186 nations strong. Upon reaching the end of Thatcher’s term, there were 244 nations. The final days of December look celebratory, as 296 nations put their sights forward in meeting the year 2020, with hopes high in what’s awaiting for them.
