Welcome to the Fourteenth Annual Defender Awards!​

Another year has passed us by and with it came new tales of herculean efforts and legendary deeds. The Defender Awards serve as a yearly celebration of the defender cause and its heroes. The Defender Awards date back fourteen years when their longtime host, The Founderless Regions Alliance, first introduced them. All members of the NationStates community are welcome to take part in one of its greatest traditions in recognizing the nations most committed to keeping free regions free. I'm your host, Kade Vasentius of The Union of Democratic States.

The Process
The Defender Awards will take place in three stages:

1) With the creation of this thread, the nominations phase will open. Players may nominate individuals and/or regions for each award as they see fit in this thread. Once a nomination has been seconded, it will be placed on the official voting ballot. Nominations will close at the end of November 8th.

2) Once the official ballot has been shared, nations will have another week to submit their votes.

3) After all of the votes have been tallied, the Winners will be revealed.

More instructions for the voting stage will be shared when the ballot is released. There will be multiple ways to vote: via forum, telegram, and even discord if there is demand.

Please make your nominations in good faith. One's made in bad faith will be thrown out at my discretion and the nominator will not be welcomed to submit votes later.

Jack - even while not being able to update often because of IRL scheduling, Jack has shown continued dedication to defending. The success of the TGW guardians program is proof of that.

Defender of the Year - Luca. Maybe an unconventional nom, but from what I’ve seen, they handle a lot of the behind the scenes stuff and would be the biggest PITA to replace.

Ananke - Sulenia. Sorry for nomming someone from my own region, but they really do handle the brunt of what we see.

Blackbird - Europeia. TBH and LWU are probably more effective pure militaries, though Europeia has a more well developed culture system, making it the invader military that I think will most likely be around 20 years from now.

Worst Op - Whichever one has the 12 hour trigger that no one spotted.

Best Op - Chaylia. The native cooperation was unique and inspiring.

Karputsk - Tim. Master of hype.

Eluvatar - Luca. Just a lot of behind the scenes technical stuff that are incredible.

Defender Of The Year - Grea Kriopia. One of the fastest R/Ders playing the game right now, a cultural and outreach powerhouse and the driving force behind the Partnership for Sovereignty bloc, GK's got her hands on just about every aspect of the defender faction and is one of the key contributors to our unprecedented success this year.

The Ananke Award - Sulenia. Vigilant, consistent and reliable, Sulen's been simply fantastic this year in spotting odd movements and warning us about those beforehand.

The Anarchotopia Award - League Defense Force. Ever since making their return to Libcord early on this year, they've been a constant force in updates, providing crucial support and leadership in countless operations. You can always bet on having at least one LDF member attending update.

The Blackbird Award - Lone Wolves United. The only raider org to successfully occupy a region and not get instantly crashed on. Keeps things interesting and competitive each time.

Sir Lans Award - Haku. Think this one needs no explanation.

The Operation Of The Year - Operation Choppy Waters/The time we successfully defender major targets from a 90+ raider updater force.

The Best Newcomer Of The Year - Luca. They've been simply wonderful ever since they started defending, providing vital behind-the-scenes support to major operations and being arguably the fastest R/Der playing right now. Plus, they've got the art of triggering down to a tee.

The Worst Operation Award - Equestria.

The Meltdown Of The Year - Operation Boom Beach.

The Numero Captain Award - Tim.

The Belgium Award - HumanSanity. Authored the only liberation resolution this year and one of the best written commendations I've read, not to mention the constant work to promote regional sovereignty in the SC.

The Worst Invader Group - The Black Hawks. TBH had the distinction of being the largest and most active raider org in existence at the beginning of the year...then they went completely dead and dragged their entire faction with it.

The Karputsk Award - Tim. Inspiration presence at major liberations, can pull and organize copious amounts of updaters out of thin air.

The Eluvatar Award - Luca. Technical wiz and creator of Eyebeast, the new flag/WFE archive to replace the old Taijitu one.

Best Defender Mentor - Grea Kriopia.

Defender of the Year Award - Tim
This last year has seen some major victories for the defender faction, and there are undoubtedly dozens of people who have contributed to that in meaningful ways all deserving of recognition. However, I think Tim's contributions in the last year have gone above and beyond in his unending efforts to maintain defender narratives, publicize and market defender successes, and bridge FA connections between defenders and indies/others. There's a lot more to be said here, but Tim has been the public face of the faction all year and we've all seen the rewards that come from it

The Ananke Award - Sulenia, New Makasta
I'm fairly confident at least 75% of the spots in Libcord's spotting channel have come from Sulen this year. Sulenia has finally swiped the spotting crown away from Hame, but I'm willing to bet that is a reward Hame is willing to give up in exchange for having such a dedicated and talented spotter in his Command team.

That being said, New Makasta has really stepped up to the plate in spotting and established themself as a reliable eye on the activity feed at every update they attend. We've been fortunate to see so many relatively newer faces show interest and skill in spotting since it's usually a less popular/neglected skill for defenders

Also, these are not nominations, but shoutout to Moonfungus/Moon and Ryccia for their spotting eagerness and desire to learn as well

Sir Lans Award - Haku
Haku wrecks us all in stats with a total of 381 updates (the most of anyone of the year), and I think the Sir Lans is a good nod to the shift in Haku's role within defending. We've seen a rise in new officers that have taken pressure off of past leadership and shared the workload more, but Haku is always at update ready to step in when things go south or when more experienced wisdom is needed.

The Operation of the Year - Operation Choppy Waters
This is an nth nomination, but Choppy Waters was a blast to work on and execute from a leadership perspective–possibly the most fun I've had in defending to date. The level of inter-organizational cooperation for Choppy Waters was unreal and we saw massive success as a result.

The Best Newcomer Award - Moon
The bias is obvious here but Moon has been fantastic as a new defender and worked hard to establish themselves in multiple areas of interest. His willingness to learn from his peers and from past history have served him well to develop skills in leadership/spotting in addition to becoming a talented SC author willing to take on the big projects others shy away from.

I don't think this needs much explanation.

The Belgium Award - HumanSanity
Defenders in the Security Council have been exceptional this year, but HS definitely deserves the nod for calling us all idiots for not caring about the SC and then establishing ways to make us care more. From the foundation of the Partnership for Sovereignty to sparring in SC debate, HS has been the primary drive behind defender interests in the SC and set a high standard on how to follow through on defender values beyond daily game updates.

The Worst Invader Group - The Incan Empire (Is that still a thing?) Also, Osiris

Not much to say here other than HS and Luca have led most of the substantial operations in the later half of this year, if not 3/4ths, and this is well deserved

As a few others have already said, Luca's contributions to the tech side of defending have been appreciated. Whether it's theorizing on the update process or developing a new Flag/WFE archive, Luca's curiosity and tech skill have brought much to the table over the last year

The Best Defender Mentor - HumanSanity
Congrats HS, you're old and good at teaching people! But in all seriousness, HS' passion to seek out and cultivate younger generations is one of the things I respect most about him and could not be more essential to shaping the future of the defending faction

Defender of the Year Award
Quebec on grounds of bringing LDF into/back into the game, along with a dozen updaters, some of whom have become incredibly competent. The rise of such a power when raiding is most vulnerable was especially impactful early this year during raiders last efforts to regain lost ground.

The Ananke Award
Sulenia, who has reliably and consistently been dropping reports in Libcord spotting since March, keeping eyes out for noob raiders who would otherwise fall through the cracks and tip delegacy streaks as well as fash sleeper ops looking for targets to capture and lock. It has been invaluable.
New Makasta, who has taken the hellish task upon himself to stare deep into the activity feed, wading through hordes of endotarters during update to keep up with raiders' switching and subtle admits, relaying that information to the rest of the defence team to ensure that everyone can be on the chase in time.

The Anarchotopia Award
The Order of the Grey Wardens, for their incredible ability to turn out over 50% of the active defenders in Libcord over any given week. Included among those are the fastest players on NS, which have made conventional raiding all but impossible.

The Blackbird Award
The Onionists for a successful occupation of a universally undesirable region, which is a deal more than pretty much any other raiding group can say.

Quebec "Big Q" Shire has undoubtedly (in my opinion) brought the most to defending this year, whether that's cultural influence or a fresh defender organization that consistently can pull WAs and show up to defend. However, one shouldn't discount GK, as PfS certainly is the most forward face of defending in the World Assembly, not to mention her insane chasing skills and being an overall joy to defend with. Very tasty when grilled also.

I think it's fair to say that 2021 has been the year of the LDF, so let's properly honor them. Also shoutout to TBH for being one of the biggest raid stoppers in GP!

The Blackbird Award: Onionist | Runner-up: TWPAF
A new face on the block, Onionist has shown incred- ah, who am I kidding. They raided Army of Freedom. Good enough for me. TWPAF was however fun to chase, so I'll throw them in here.

Sir Lans Award: Haku | Runner-ups (tied): Luca, Makasta
The three biggest updaters from what I can tell, their contributions to the R/D game have certainly not been negligible. Let's give a round of applause to them, updating even through token detag minors.

Genua. What more can I say? 121 updaters bashing the biggest fash R/D org. Chaylia was a blast to liberate, however, so they get an honorary mention.

The Best Newcomer Award: LDF | Runner-up: Moon
Again, the LDF as an organization has greatly benefitted defenderdom, so they'll be my pick for best newcomers. Shoutout to Moon, however, a great defender whose only been on NS for a few months.

NuCa's been in (or was in :<) the defending game for yeeeeears. Same with Dyr. I sided with NuCa however since they've most recently defended.

Not too many meltdowns this time around, but my first choice was obvious. Second was also pretty clear to me, heh.

These 4 have stood out to me as the big liberation leaders this year. And one thing's for sure - Tim is front and center. We don't know exactly how or even why he does it, but he can pull updaters out of his ass like those weird magicians can pull that colored rope out of their mouths. Very bizarre, but we appreciate it. Their hype skills are nuts.

Defender of the year. Despite there is lots of good individual effort, how i think this it should be specificly the individual who contributed most. Aka if would have for reason or or another not participated at all this year, would have had most biggest effect. There for my nominations are
Sulenia and Luca

Without Sulen there would still be very little raider spotting between minor and major resulting nearly completle lack of libs of any kind left Minors. Also due taking lion share of running field operations in TITO, every single person would have needed to step up instead as time allows. Done it all by phone only to add

Withoud Luca someone else would have needed to do lionshare of the preperations for most major operations. Combine that with new tecnical and tactical. In my mind individual whose contrubtions whould have hurt defender cause where it would have mattered most.
